Stora Enso, Imatra Mill optimizing energy efficiency and increasing production

The operation of buildings accounts for up to 30% of global energy consumption. Stora Enso aimed to take significant steps toward their sustainability goals by enhancing the ventilation system in the machine hall around the paper machinery.

Stora Enso’s Imatra Mill in Southern Finland sought to redesign its machine hall ventilation around paper machinery and increase the production of PM6.

The investment was targeted at improving machine hall ventilation, balancing temperature differences, and enhancing the performance of heat recovery in the ventilation system. The objective was to achieve energy savings by reducing steam consumption in supply air heating.

TM Systems’s product: Heat Recovery and Machine Hall Ventilation

The air balance in the machine room was improved by installing new supply air units. Simultaneously, the heat recovery system underwent a reconstruction, incorporating a modern heat recovery tower. This included a new hood exhaust system, supply air system, and the heating of process water and glycol water.

The heat recovery system relies on a complete recirculation of drying air. This resulted in increased energy recovery and savings, along with improved working conditions in the surroundings.

The machine hall building and machinery are now protected from deterioration and corrosion, prolonging their lifespan. Additionally, by replacing the mist collector in the wire cleaner, the moisture load in the wet end was reduced.

Stora Enso is now one step closer to achieving its sustainability goals

“We evaluated solutions offered by various suppliers and chose to collaborate with TM System Finland Oy, as they provided the best combination of price and quality. The solution has met our expectations,” comments Pasi Lampinen, Production Manager at Stora Enso.

Due to the new installations, paper machine production increased. With the process requiring less steam, Imatra Mill can significantly reduce its energy consumption.

“We are already observing clear energy savings, and our goals for ventilation improvements have been successfully met.”
